Choosing the Perfect Decorative Pillows by Laura-Jane Kerr
This spring, I decided to do a bit of redecorating. Having retired recently, I’m spending a lot more time at home and on the boat, and I just felt like things needed a bit of spicing up.
A designer I spoke to suggested that I could do a lot with decorative pillows. “Hang on,” I said. “I might be a grandmother, but that doesn’t mean I want to spend my time embroidering ‘Home Sweet Home’ on a pillow!”
Arnaud just smiled and told me to do a bit of looking around online. I could not believe my eyes! Decorative pillows have certainly come a long way from the days of my own grandmother’s musty parlour.
You can get pillows in any shape you can imagine. Funny animals, candies, martini glasses and olives; you name it, and there is a pillow shaped like it. I ended up getting a whole set of pond-themed pillows – frogs and fish and lily-pads – for a playroom my husband and I are setting up for the grandkids.
Those funny shapes are a riot, but not quite the thing for my sitting room. Luckily, decorative pillows aren’t just about unique shapes. They also come in a seemingly endless variety of beautiful patterns and sizes. Many online stores will even create custom designed art pillows for those of us that are sticklers for harmony in décor.
I settled on the most gorgeous set of black and cream pillows with sprays of bamboo silk-screened on the cream front sides. The black and cream match my sitting room, and the hint of green adds that little extra touch of style that gives the space some real personality.
For the boat, which our kids call “mom and dad’s hippie pad,” I acquired a colorful assortment of embroidered silk pillows that look like something out of the Arabian Nights! They add a ton of color and fun to the small cabin that is done mostly is light pine.
If I’ve learned anything from this experience, it’s that all spaces can be transformed by the addition of a few decorative pillows. And when you shop online, it’s like shopping at the perfect mall.
