Travel Pillows for Style, Comfort, and Convenience by Melena Ingersol

When I first began travelling for business, I had no idea what I was getting into. The long hours, the cramped seating, the red-eyes caught at the last possible minute – by the end of a trip I was always in a rough shape. When I needed to sleep, I tried using a rolled-up towel as a pillow!

That was before I got my first travel pillow. These days, planes and trains are my favorite spots for catching up on my beauty sleep. I walk into business meetings after six hours on a plane looking fresh as a daisy, and there’s not a haggard head in the room that doesn’t turn.

The first thing you need to decide on when buying new travel pillows is what kind of fill you want to haul around. If you are looking for an orthopedic pillow, you can get pillows made of memory foam, or filled with buckwheat or polybeans designed to conform to the shape of your neck.

Unfortunately, these pillows can be on the heavy side, so if you are looking to travel light, your best option will be an inflatable travel pillow. These pillows blow up in just a few second – some of them even inflate automatically – and most deflate at the touch of a button.

Many travellers do not find these inflatables to be ideal as orthopedic pillows, but the technology is advancing by the day. Many inflatable travel pillows now come with different sections that can be inflated to varying levels so that you can design the perfect firmness level for your pillow. My personal choice is always for the inflatable pillows, because they store and travel so easily.

Once you’ve decided on your fill, it’s time to choose a shape. Every manufacturer has a different idea of what the perfect shape will be, but in the end, it comes down to what works best for you.

The classic shape – and my personal favorite – is the U-shape. The U-shape lets you sleep comfortably in a sitting position. You can lean back, or snuggle to either side. I shift a lot in my sleep, and this allows me to move around without the pillow sliding away or my ending up in someone’s lap!

From the U-shape, you can go up a level to a complete circle that allows you to lean forward, or to an L-shape. Some people find the complete circle a bit too restrictive, but it can be great if you want to be able to sleep leaning slightly forward in your seat.

An L-shaped travel pillow usually comes with a backrest, and a larger pillow off to one side. It is ideal for side-sleepers that aren’t too fidgety because it provides one extra-comfy side. However, when you do move, the L-shapes tend to slip out of place.

Last but not least, you can choose a long, rectangular pillow. Filled with buckwheat or memory foam, these are ideal if you’re looking for an all-purpose orthopedic pillow. They shape nicely around your head, and you can also use them for leg and lumbar support, as needed.

Whichever pillow you choose, always make sure that it has a removable cloth covering that you can wash, and that the covering is soft! My favorite travel pillow right now is an inflatable U-shape with a fleece cover. I picked mine up online at Magellans. Those guys are really the best in the business when it comes to travel accessories. Check out the links on this page and see for yourself!
